CSA Member Workers

Overview

Our member worker program allows you to work with us on our farm and receive a rebate on the cost of your CSA membership.  It’s a great opportunity to do meaningful hands-on work and gain a closer connection to your food.  Member workers make an important contribution to our farm, and this program requires a serious commitment from you.

Shift Schedules

You can work any of the schedules listed below.  Each schedule includes several half-day workshifts.

Start DateEnd DateDay and TimeNumber of Shifts Worked
May-June: At this time of year, we will primarily thin apple fruitlets (remove excess tiny apples from the trees). This is tedious and requires concentration. We may also weed, which requires stooping or kneeling on the ground for extended periods.
May 25June 15Wednesdays 1:00-4:30 PM4
May 28June 18Saturdays 8:30 AM-Noon4
July: We will primarily weed, which requires stooping or kneeling for extended periods. You need a healthy back and knees! It can be hot and humid at this time of year.
July 6July 20Wednesdays, 1:00-4:30 PM3
August-October: We will weigh and pack apples for delivery. You will work indoors, standing up. You need to be careful and accurate.
August 24October 26Wednesdays, 8:00-11:30 AM10
Aug. 24 or 31October 19 or 26Alternate Wednesdays, 8:00-11:30 AM5

  • Vacation plans? If you cannot make one or two of the dates in your schedule, we can probably reschedule them – please ask.
  • You can work several of the schedules listed above (for example, you could work Wednesdays from May 26-June 16, and then also work Wednesdays from July 7-July 21).
  • However, you can’t mix dates from schedules at different times of year – for example, we don’t want you to work one day in June, another in July, and another in September.  If you work several shifts at the same time of year, you will become more proficient with the tasks we perform in that season.
  • If you’d like to share the work with a friend or family member, we are open to both of you working together.  In general, we don’t want you to split your schedule with another person, so that you each do some of the shifts.  Each worker should enroll for one of the full schedules listed above.

Work

Farmwork is physically and mentally demanding.  Look at the shift schedule above to see what type of work you’re likely to do at different times of year, and what that work demands.  If there’s heavy rain, we usually find indoor work, but otherwise we work outside in all weather: hot or cold, sunny or drizzly.

You do not need experience – we will train you.  You do need interest, enthusiasm, concentration and the physical ability to do the work.

Gear: You should wear what the weather requires: we recommend a sun hat, work gloves, and a water bottle. If it’s wet or rainy, raingear and waterproof boots are important.

Phones: Please don’t use your phone while working.

Children: We don’t allow children under the age of 12 because they can distract you from your work.

Dogs: We don’t allow dogs, because they require attention, can damage our crops, and distract other workers.

Compensation

CSA member workers receive a rebate on the cost of their CSA membership.  The rebate is $35 for each 3.5 hour shift worked.  (So if you work three shifts, you’ll receive a $105 rebate).

If the rebate is greater than the cost of your share, you can also use it towards buying extra #1 or #2 grade apples, seedlings, applesauce, or apple butter from us.  Sorry, but you cannot carry an unspent rebate over from one year to another.
